When I was leaving for university, one of the biggest things that attracted me to Connecticut was the fact that it was on the coastline and there was access to the water. And while the New England beaches had nothing on the Caribbean, it still made me feel at home.
Now that I'm home for the summer, the first thing I wanted to do was spend time in the ocean. Hello, it's summer! 90-degree weather, shining sun and surrounded by my family and friends, what else could I possibly want?! And so many of my friends from university tell me the same thing: all they want to do this summer is lay out by the water, tan, and spend time with their loved ones.
My college friends were from all over the world: some from the Caribbean, some from the United States, some from Europe, Australia and beyond. When we would sit and talk about our summers, there was one thing we had in common, despite he many many differences in where we came from: we all spent our summers in the water!
With the 4th of July and the long weekend quickly approaching, I figured I would share some fun ways you can enjoy the water: this holiday weekend and all summer long.
// go boating: Grab some friends, rent a boat for the day (or find friends who have one!) and head out to the lake or to sea and spend the day driving around, tanning, taking a dip in the water and just spending the day with your family and friends. I have a special spot in my heart for spending the days on the boat because I grew up doing it, but for a lot of people, they get very nervous going boating with young children! Luckily, Discover Boating has tons of details on youth boating programs so your kids can learn to love the water from young.
// water skiing: Last year, my cousin Shannon visited me and we took a trip to Vermont to learn how to ski. Shannon was born and raised in Florida, and spent all of her summers growing up in San Diego, so I thought for sure I'd be a better skiier than her. Turns out, spending so much time in sunshine states meant she spent a lot of time water skiing, which meant that she was naturally a better skiier than me. Not fair! BUT, what I take that to mean is that if you're a naturally good skiier, water skiing may be calling your name! It's fun and a little adventure combined into one so you can't complain.
// go fishing: The best part about fishing is that you don't have to be limited to an ocean state to do this like some of the other activities! You don't need to be on a beach or in the ocean to go fishing, all you need is a somewhat active body of water, like a lake or creek! Head to your nearest lake with a bucket of worms and a rod and get to fishing! To this day, the most fun memories and the most laughs I had from my experiences fishing have been from the times when I didn't catch a thing!
// go on a party cruise: SO many places have daily party cruises that sail around a marina! My little and her friends are planning a day cruise in Boston to celebrate her 21st birthday, and it seems like so much fun! So while you don't have to get in the water, you still get the experience of being there!
// go banana boating: OK, this one is just plain fun! You and four friends get to sit on a yellow contraption shaped like a banana being dragged around by a boat, and riding the waves! The point is to hold on, but the fun always happens when you fall off! I can't tell you how many times I've cried of laughter on the banana boat with my siblings growing up and my friends in later years!
// go swimming: This one obviously goes without saying, but the best part about being in the water is just swimming, feeling the cold water on you and taking in the rays of sun while floating! You don't have to be at a beach or in the ocean to enjoy taking a dip, jump in the lake or swim in a creek.. there's nothing quite like getting your feet (or your whole body) wet!
While the activities differ by area and by availability, finding a place to boat nearby is a lot easier than you think. Interested, but don't know where to go? Check out Discover Boating's Get on the Water tool to find a place you can go boating near you! You're literally a click away from spending the summer on the water!
And while you're there, take this fun quiz to find out what kind of boat best suits you.. I imagine mine will say a yacht because I'm a princess, right?!
How are you spending your holiday weekend? Are you going to go boating this summer? I know I am!
